The Circle of Law: Honoring Native American Wisdom and the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path

The "Circle of Law" (COL) is a profound ancient practice rooted in the traditions of Native American wisdom and the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path of the Twisted Hairs. It offers an invaluable framework for self-governance and serves as a guide for creating mature, conscious, and harmonious coexistence among individuals and communities. In a world where division and imbalance often dominate, the Circle of Law provides a path to peace and collective well-being.

The Core Principles of the Circle of Law

Humans are born free, and this inherent freedom must be cherished and protected. At the same time, our diversity necessitates the creation of laws that honor and reflect the values of everyone within a community. The Circle of Law emphasizes the importance of listening to all voices and considering every aspect of life in the decision-making process. This practice aligns with the sacred laws of the universe, recognizing that all forms of life share equal value and that maintaining balance is essential.

The COL is inspired by the medicine wheel and the eight directions, which embody the power of the circle. Each position within the circle is balanced, with equal representation of men and women. At the center of the circle lies the "fire of the children," a principle ensuring that no decision or law can harm children. Here, children represent all beings on Grandmother Earth—minerals, plants, animals, humans, and spirits—emphasizing the interconnectedness of life.

Reimagining Decision-Making

Imagine a world where governments, religions, companies, and organizations centered their rules, laws, and decisions around the principle of the fire of the children. This shift would prioritize the well-being of future generations and the delicate balance of all life. The Circle of Law invites us to embrace this perspective, transforming our approach to leadership and coexistence.

Awakening Your Inner Circle of Law

The transformative power of the Circle of Law begins within. Each of us carries an inner COL, composed of the voices of our eight medicine chiefs and the fire of the children. By awakening these inner voices, we can address life’s questions from a holistic perspective and discover our personal truths. This journey toward inner peace enables us to contribute meaningfully to peace in our relationships, communities, and the broader world.

What to Expect in the Workshop

In this four-day workshop, participants will:

  • Learn to truly listen: Discover how to hear the truth behind the words.

  • Speak from a place of connection: Connect with your inner safety and the wisdom of the womb.

  • Explore personal and collective truths: Distinguish your truth from the position you hold in the circle.

Guided by Ursula Raab, a licensed teacher of the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path, and Regina Kradephol, both with over 20 years of experience in the Circle of Law, this workshop blends ancient wisdom with practical application. Participants will engage deeply with the teachings of the eight directions, integrating knowledge through experiential practices such as a sweat lodge and collaborative decision-making.

A Path Toward Meaningful Coexistence

The Circle of Law offers more than a method for decision-making; it provides a way to live in alignment with the sacred balance of life. By observing life’s themes from a higher perspective and embodying the principles of the COL, participants will gain the tools to create lasting and meaningful communities, projects, and enterprises.
